How We Selected These Espresso Machines

We focused on espresso machines priced under $600 that deliver a strong combination of quality, ease of use, and durability. We also considered features like temperature control, included accessories, and maintenance requirements.

Our goal was to highlight machines that suit a range of skill levels, from beginners to enthusiasts, ensuring you get the best value and performance for your investment.

🗣️ jennifer

My Duo Temp arrived 3 days ago so I have only been using it that long. That said, I am very satisfied so far. This is my first home espresso machine. I, like many, have a very serious S**rbucks addiction and I’ve always wanted to be able to make those wonderfully delicious drinks at home. This machine allows me to do that. The machine heats up quick. I don’t think my Kuerig heats up as fast. The steam wand is commercial grade and even though I am a rookie, I find it easy to make a good micro foam. It comes with 4 baskets for the portafilter. 2 are pressurized double wall filters (for pre ground beans). And the other 2 are single wall non-pressurized (for freshly ground beans). I’ve been using the pressurized baskets with preground espresso. People will tell you you can’t get a good shot unless you buy an extravagant $200 grinder and beans roasted within 5 days of when you brew. I used preground Lavazza coffee and I made 5 lattes this past weekend that I would be glad to get if I ordered them in a coffee shop. So regardless of whether you opt for the expensive grinder this machine will still pull a great shot. That said, I also wouldn’t waste my time on a cheap grinder. Either buy the expensive high quality grinder, or don’t and just buy high quality preground coffee. Lavazza and Illy are best from what I’ve read. I can only vouch for Lavazza. I also love the PID and the backflush feature that cools the machine after steaming so you can quickly pull another shot. There is a tamper and pitcher included. The pitcher is high quality and the tamper is certainly very usable. It is pretty cool how the tamper has a magnetic storage location on the machine so it doesn’t get misplaced.

🗣️ Andrew D.

I had an old Breville espresso machine Model: 800ESXL that I purchased in January 2007 (yes I still have the paper work for the machine). That espresso machine lasted 17 YEARS!!! It made the most delicious espresso up until its last day. It surpassed all my expectations of an espresso machine. I was in need of a new one but couldn’t spend too much at the time. So I settled for a Gevi espresso machine Model:GECME022-U. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with the Gevi model. Everything was made of plastic and it only lasted 8 months before the whole machine started leaking water from every part. I could never get a good tasting espresso from the Gevi machine. So I saved up enough to invest in a new Breville espresso machine Model:BES810 BSSUSC. I made my first cup of espresso today with my new machine and at last, I had my perfect beloved espresso back again!!! Lesson learned: you get what you pay for. If this espresso machine lasts nearly as long as my first one did than Breville – you will have a customer for life! Time will tell… One thing that has changed from the original Breville machine I had is the water tank. I am not crazy about it being on the back of the machine. I find it difficult to reach your hand down in the tank for cleaning. Also, being on the back of the unit it is hard to see the water level. I loved the older model that had the wide box like water tank in the center with the water level window you could see from the front. Just my opinion. Thank you Breville for making a great quality espresso machine!!! ☕️🥰

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should You Consider When Choosing an Affordable Espresso Machine?

When selecting an affordable espresso machine, focus on build quality, pressure capability, and ease of use. Look for machines with at least 15 bars of pressure to ensure proper extraction. Consider whether you want a semi-automatic or fully automatic model, as semi-automatic machines give you more control but require a learning curve. Pay attention to the size of the portafilter—58 mm is the commercial standard and allows for better accessories and upgrades.

Also, check if the machine includes a steam wand for milk frothing if you enjoy lattes or cappuccinos. Remember that investing in a good burr grinder and fresh coffee beans is just as important as the machine itself to get the best flavor. Finally, consider maintenance aspects like ease of cleaning, water reservoir size, and availability of replacement parts to ensure your machine lasts.

How Can You Get the Best Espresso Results From These Machines?

To achieve great espresso, start with freshly ground coffee beans using a burr grinder, as grind size greatly affects extraction. Use the correct amount of coffee and apply consistent tamping pressure—around 30 pounds—to ensure even water flow. Preheat your machine and portafilter to stabilize temperature, which is crucial for flavor consistency.

Pay attention to the pressure gauge if your machine has one; ideal extraction pressure is around 9 bars. When steaming milk, use cold whole milk and practice proper technique to create velvety microfoam for lattes or cappuccinos.

Regularly clean your machine, including the steam wand and group head, to avoid buildup that can impact taste. Be patient with the learning curve—many users find that experimenting with grind size, tamping, and shot timing over several weeks leads to the best results.

Are There Any Common Issues or Misconceptions You Should Be Aware Of?

Yes, several common concerns come up with affordable espresso machines. First, don’t expect instant perfection; these machines often require a warm-up period and some practice to master.

Some models may have weaker steam wands that limit milk frothing capacity, so if you make multiple milk-based drinks in a row, allow time for the machine to recover pressure. Another misconception is that all espresso machines come ready to use out of the box—running a cleaning cycle and descaling before first use can improve performance. Also, some machines have reservoirs that are hard to see or fill precisely, so be cautious to avoid overfilling and leaks.

Lastly, understand that cheaper machines may have shorter lifespans or require occasional repairs, but choosing brands with good customer support and an active user community can help you troubleshoot and maintain your machine effectively.

Wrapping Up

Choosing the right espresso machine under $600 can transform your daily coffee routine. These machines offer professional-level espresso extraction, reliable steam wands for frothing, and durable construction that will serve you well for years. Whether you want a machine that’s easy to use or one that offers room to grow your barista skills, there’s an option here for you.

Investing in a quality espresso machine not only saves money over time but also gives you the freedom to customize your drinks exactly how you like them. With the right machine, you can enjoy rich, flavorful espresso and creamy milk-based beverages from the comfort of your home, making every morning a little more special.
